Theodore Boone, the protagonist of the novel, gets agitated when he finds that his best friend —April Finnemore — has disappeared into the night. Nobody has any clue whatsoeveras to April’s whereabouts. Even Theodore, who is very close and knows everything about April, is left clueless as to what happened to his friend. The news spreads like an epidemic in his small town, leaving people in fear and the police end up in vain in their searches. Police also suspects Jack Leeper, who is the distant cousin of the Finnemore family and an escaped prison inmate.

As Theodore finds that the case is heading nowhere in police investigations, he decides to take matters into his own hands and finds a solution to recover his abducted friend.
